Dinner at Toners/birthday celebration at Valerie's - Utsunomiyia

Valerie planned a dinner outing with a few friends from Utsunomiyia.  Marlon and I loved the awesome location, decor, and delicious food. Diner has a lot of old classic antique design interior items. We had the best time with everyone, the American burgers were absolutely delicious.  This place reminds me of the good ole days with friends enjoying burgers and homemade fries. Love the atmosphere. Definitely worth the visit. A must place to try if your in Utsunomiya.

Now back to Valerie's house to celebrate Clement's birthday.

Utsunomiya Bound by Shinkansen

Last night in Toyko, one last look at the city before getting on the shinkansen and going to Utsunomiya.
Dinner and drinks at THE IRISH DUBLINER watched some rugby on TV in the pub.

Breakfast at Wendy's.  Yeah, they have a Wendy's but it's not like what we have in the USA.  Mary didn't know what sauce was on her egg and hamburger (not sausage) but she said it was delicious.

I found this amusing. When I went into the bathroom, the toilet started responding by opening the lid, I laughed a little then it sounded like it running water.  I sat down and wow warm seat, then it sprayed my front and back. LOL  After I get up it flushed and the lid shut.  Only in Japan  LOL Please click the link for some amusement. Click on the words below to see why I freaked out.

On our way to the train station. Every day we have walked at least 18,000 steps.  My feet are beginning to bark LOL. Thank goodness there are always products in the hotel room to put in bath water to soak. Lots of steps....

Marlon and Mary went and got our special tickets needed to ride the Shinkansen.

Utsunomiya Tour with Keiko

Marlon and I really enjoyed Keiko's invitation to explore Utsunomiya, Japan.  The first stop was Tochigiken Sougoubunnka Center.  Keiko's friend told her about the display at the center of her friend Miyatake.  I am very impressed with Miyatakes' work.  Miyatake started off using wire then covering with clay.  She told us that doing this style made her work very fragile so she went back to only using clay.  I loved how all her the figurines were smiling.  The faces tell a story as if they are talking to us without saying any words.  While we were looking at Miyatake's amazing work, a TV station NHK was filming her work.  NHK came up to me and I swallowed hard when they started asking me questions.  I answered them the best I could, it made me a little nervous, but since I liked the work it was easy to talk about.  That evening I was on TV news that started at 6;40pm.  My interview was on TV around 7pm.  Keiko had sent me an email telling me about seeing me on TV.  I still can't believe that I was on TV........:-)  Here are a few pictures of her work. Including this one which is my favorite.

After the TV interview, we were ready to leave.  Since we could not take photos in the exhibition we bought a book of her clay figure photos.  We also asked Miyatake if she would autograph our book.  She not only gave us an autograph she let me take her picture with our group.
Now down to the 2nd floor to see an art exhibit on watercolor paintings of flowers in Tochigi Prefecture.  One artist was on location and I got his photo by his paintings.  I was hoping to see some paintings in the exhibit of Yoko.
Now Keiko is taking us to the Tochigi City Building where we will go to the top floor and take a view of Utsunomiya.  It was a nice view of the city.  I could see for miles and miles.  Thanks Keiko for the great tour of Utsunomiya, Japan.

On the top floor, there was also a display of all the items that are made in Utsunomiya.

Its time to take a break so we went across the street and sat on some benches in the shade.  So peaceful as there was also a big water fountain.  There were some soda machines so we each bought something to drink and sat down and talked.  Keiko had brought supplies to teach me how to make 9 monkeys on a boat.  We drank our beverages and I learned how to make the craft.  I am happy that Keiko also gave me extra special seeds that are used for monkey's head and all the supplies to finish making the monkeys and boat.  Wow, what a great time Marlon and I have had today.

April 6 Utsunomiya Park/Tower/Hanami

This park is the best park in Utsunomiya, Japan.  There are go-carts, LONG slides, tunnels and more
Even I got excited when I saw all the playground equipment.  My grandkids would dearly love to play at this wonderful park.
Once Kensho saw everything there was to do he brought back the Gameboy and wanted to go play. LOL
As we stood at the top of the stairs we looked for a location to have our picnic.
Kensho is taking off to play with all the park toys.
I just loved all the slides they are so long and would be so fun to slide down.
Kensho is the cool kid on the block.
In Japan, I saw many parents using a rope to play with their children.  Here these little girls are plotting how to get through the rope without touching it.
Heading up the steps now to cross over this very long bridge to the Utsunomiya Tower area where cherry blossom hanami is being held.

View of park from top of hill
The mountains are so beautiful today. Great view.
Valerie can't find her camera Teresa is helping her find it. Finally found it was in the very bottom of her bag.
These 2 statues are so cute holding on to the acorn between them.

When we were crossing the bridge Valerie's hat was blown off and fell in the water below.
After we crossed the bridge we were inside the Utsunomiya Tower area where the hanami festival was going to be held.
Many vendors have already set up and cute lanterns are strung around the area.  The cherry blossom trees are not blooming. I think they should have postponed for a week.
We went up to the top of Utsunomiya Tower and had the best view of Utsunomiya City.  Kensho is taking a better look by using the binoculars.

Valerie and Teresa admiring the view.
Kencho and I stopped and bought a sucker from one of the vedors. YUMMY
